Chasing the Record: Josh’s Mid-Year Update

By Isabel lovett July 04, 2025

Since teeing off in January, Josh's world record attempt has turned into more than simply a numbers game; it's become a test of endurance, mindset, and unwavering love for the game. Every day, rain or shine, he's out on the fairways, pursuing the quest for 581.

What began as a daring challenge has evolved into a journey full of remarkable moments: unplanned encounters with sporting icons, rare opportunity to play at some of the UK's most elite and isolated courses, and personal milestones such as breaking par on unfamiliar terrain. It’s a reminder that even the most ambitious goals are made up of small, daily victories.

We managed to catch up with Josh for a personal, behind-the-scenes look at how he’s really holding up amidst this incredible quest, and he didn’t hold back. From the physical grind to the emotional highs and unexpected challenges, Josh had a lot to share about what it truly takes to chase a world record, one round at a time.

Full interview below.

So Josh, how's your challenge going so far?

“This year has easily been the hardest of my life so far,” he admits. “The nature of doing something so repetitive really takes a lot out of you. Playing golf every single day since January 24th… you need the mentality of taking it day by day.” As of writing, Josh has completed 259 rounds and is ahead of schedule with a projected total of around 614 by the year’s end.

Has there been any moments on this journey that hit you a bit differently, something you’ll never forget?

“Honestly, so many. Hitting my first milestone on Mother’s Day. Bumping into a snooker legend on day 147. Breaking par for the first time on a course I’d never seen before. It’s amazing, I just wish I had more time to appreciate it all as it’s happening.” Josh stated. “I’ve been fortunate enough to tick off a fair few of the UK’s most scenic and secluded spots, it’s been truly unreal.”

After completing 259 courses are there any that stood out to you?

"Best golf course I’d have to say either Sunningdale Old or Swinley Forest, both are timeless classics and offer something really special.

The best overall experience would be Queenwood. Everything from the atmosphere to the service is on another level, it’s just a different world.

My happy place has to be Parkstone. There’s just something about the vibe there that always puts me at ease. As for hidden gems, the biggest surprise so far would be either Borth & Ynyslas or Longcliffe. Both totally under the radar, but absolutely worth the trip."

Now that you’ve been living the van life for a while, how’s it actually been? Any surprises or things you didn’t expect?

“Not easy,” he laughs. “You take a lot for granted living a ‘normal’ life, simple things like laundry, cooking a proper meal, even having access to a decent toilet. When you’re on the road every day, those basic comforts become luxuries. At first, it was definitely a shock to the system, but over time I’ve adapted, and weirdly, I’ve come to enjoy it.”

"What started as a tough adjustment has gradually become part of the rhythm. You learn to live with less and make it work. I’ve got my routines now, and most nights I’m so exhausted after the round, I sleep like a rock. It’s not glamorous, but it’s mine, and there’s a strange kind of freedom in that.”

Has the support from the golfing community helped and made a difference during your journey?

“Massively,” Josh says without hesitation. “People are always cheering me on, whether it’s encouraging words, someone offering to do laundry, help with food, or just giving me something to look forward to. It all matters.”

A challenge like this doesn’t happen in isolation. Along the way, Josh has had support from the golf community, helpful strangers, and a bit of reliable gear. What appear to be small gestures have had a significant influence over the course of such a long and difficult journey. From kind messages on social media to unexpected offers of help from people he's met along the way, the human connection has helped him keep going. “It reminds you you’re not doing this completely alone,” he adds. “Some days can feel really tough, whether it’s the weather, the distance, or just the mental side of it, and it’s those little moments of support that really help you push through. It makes a bigger difference than people probably realise.”

How have you been finding using a Stewart Golf trolley?

“The trolley’s been amazing. I’ve walked 70% of my rounds and Stewie’s been with me every step. It’s designed to make life easier, and with a challenge like this, that’s exactly what you need. So many people I meet on the course love it.”

Through it all, one thing has remained constant: his commitment to walking the course. With almost 70% of his circuits completed on foot thus far, the journey has been about more than just smashing records, it's also about doing things correctly. And, with 'Stewie' by his side, his Stewart Golf cart has performed an unseen but critical part in making every round possible.

Josh’s journey is all about connection and community. If you’d like to follow along, or even invite him to tee it up at your home course, you can do so through the link here.
