Unexpected Heroics on the Links of Royal Portrush

How one Stewart Golf customer saved the day with their VERTX Remote.

Earlier this year, Content Creator and Stewart Golf ambassador, Peter Finch, touched down in Northern Ireland, preparing to play one of the world’s most iconic courses: Royal Portrush. There was just one problem. Flying with his Stewart Golf Q Follow wasn’t possible and at short-notice, getting a new Q Follow delivered wasn't an option either. With his tee time looming and no electric trolley in hand, we turned to our Northern Irish customer base for one simple request: could anyone lend a hand - and a trolley?

Meet Desmond Orr: Royal Portrush Member, Golf Fanatic & Stewart Golf Champion.

Desmond Orr has been golfing for nearly 25 years, and for the last 15, he's been a proud member at Royal Portrush, playing three times a week, rain or shine. Like many of us, Desmond once pushed a heavily loaded trolley across the rugged dunes of Northern Ireland, battling hills, wind, and the ever-present rough. Eventually, his wife pointed out that his uphill pushing posture resembled more of a hunchback than a Tour pro.

His early experiences with electric trolleys weren’t great - battery problems, unreliable tracking, and frustrating control. But all of that changed six months ago when a friend was gifted a Stewart Golf trolley. Desmond was impressed. Very impressed. He took the plunge and ordered a VERTX Remote, complete with a 27-hole battery. It arrived immaculately packaged and was christened “Harry” shortly thereafter.

“I especially like being able to drive my trolley ‘Harry’ around the green to the next tee box while I putt out,” Desmond said. “It’s never blown over in the strong winds we get, and the six-wheel stability is fantastic.”

Despite joking that his golf hasn’t improved, Desmond walks the course with renewed energy and a smile on his face. As he put it: “I can now stride down the fairway with head held high, like Rory on a birdie streak.”

A Call From Stewart Golf.

When Peter Finch contacted us in need of a trolley at Portrush, we quickly got in touch with Desmond. At first, he thought it might be a scam.

“When Mark Stewart emailed me asking to borrow my trolley for Peter Finch, I was skeptical. Thankfully I knew who Peter was from his videos, and I was already due to play Portrush that morning, so it was a no-brainer.”

With “Harry” fully charged and his old push trolley dusted off, Desmond met Peter’s team at the club and even joined them for the round. As a self-confessed fan of Peter’s content, he was fascinated to him in action - and surprised at just how far Peter hits it.

“Peter’s lines off the tee were unknown to me and most other mortals. His short game was also pretty tidy."

For Desmond the experience itself was unforgettable: a day spent at his home course, walking the same fairways as the best in the world, sharing it with one of golf’s most popular voices.

The Open at Royal Portrush: A Championship to Remember.

This past week, Royal Portrush once again took centre stage as the world’s best golfers battled it out on the iconic Dunluce Links. Hosting The Open Championship for just the second time since 1951, the course delivered everything fans hoped for: drama, brilliance, heartbreak, and history.

As thousands lined the rugged fairways and millions watched from around the world, Portrush showed exactly why it’s considered one of the finest tests in championship golf. The infamous Calamity Corner lived up to its name, the Atlantic winds added a layer of unpredictability, and the closing stretch demanded nothing short of perfection.

For locals like Desmond Orr, it was a moment of immense pride. To not only be a member but to have played a small part in the week’s build-up made it all the more special.

And while Rory McIlroy may not have lifted the Claret Jug this time, his presence on home soil ignited the crowds. The 2025 Open at Royal Portrush will be remembered not just for its champion, but for the passion, setting, and sheer beauty of links golf at its very best.

More Than a Trolley: A Community.

This story highlights what Stewart Golf is really about. Not just building world-class electric trolleys, but being part of a passionate community of golfers who support each other across countries and continents.

Thank you to Desmond for stepping up, sharing “Harry,” and embodying the spirit of the game.
