Paddy’s Golf Marathon for MND

'7 in 7': The Ultimate Golf Marathon

This June, Hampshire-based professional golfer Paddy Towson-Sheehy will embark on a remarkable challenge: playing seven rounds of golf each day, for seven consecutive days, all in support of motor neurone disease (MND).

Labelled as his 'Golf Marathon Challenge', Paddy will play 882 holes and cover approximately 177 miles on foot, raising funds for MND in memory of his uncle Alan, who tragically died from motor neurone disease in 2019.

MND is a devastating disease that affects the brain and nerves, gradually taking away the ability to move, speak, and eventually breathe. There’s no cure yet, but every challenge like this brings us closer, by raising significant funds to aid research.

The challenge will be taking place across seven different courses within Yorkshire, further paying homage to his uncle Alan, with the final course of the seven being Baildon Golf Club, where Alan was a member.

“It’s all for my Uncle Alan", Paddy explained. "He was such a big part of our family and played the game with so much love. After losing him to MND, I knew I had to do something that meant something. I’ve always loved golf, so this challenge just felt right — one swing, one step at a time, for him.”

Paddy has been deeply inspired by the extraordinary bond between Rob Burrow CBE and Kevin Sinfield. Their journey—marked by Rob’s unwavering courage in the face of motor neurone disease and Kevin’s relentless support—left a lasting impact on Paddy. The iconic 7 in 7 in 7 marathons showed the world what persistence, loyalty, and love can achieve Paddy, a Leeds Rhinos supporter, watched every step of the journey. Now he is adding his own.

Stewart Golf are proud to be supporting Paddy during his challenge, and will be providing him with a VERTX Remote (and a few spare batteries!) to use for the majority of these 49 rounds.

Paddy’s not just swinging for birdies. He’s swinging for change, for memories and for hope.

The 882-hole journey.

The challenge will begin at Headingley Golf Club in Leeds, as a tribute to Rob Burrow CBE who sadly lost his life to MND in June 2024. This is the spiritual home of Leeds Rhinos, where Rob established his reputation and inspired a generation. His battle with motor neurone illness, fought with courage, humour, and unwavering dignity, has inspired people far beyond the rugby pitch.

Paddy explained: “I have very strong family connections to Yorkshire, particularly around Leeds and Bradford, so this challenge is very special to me and is very personal."

From there, Paddy will travel across Yorkshire, playing Sand Moor, Moor Allerton, Garforth, Rudding Park, and Roundhay. Each course on his route was picked with intention, either due to family links or symbolic significance. It's a journey that combines sadness, gratitude, remembrance, and movement.

The final stop will be Baildon Golf Club, where Paddy's Uncle Alan spent years playing and where the man who inspired this challenge is fondly remembered. Finishing there will mean more than just the completion of a physical exam. It'll be a homecoming. A homage. A moment to pause, reflect, and honour a life well lived.

“This is very personal,” Paddy explains in his interview. “My Uncle Alan lived in Yorkshire and was a massive part of our lives. He was a golfer too, he played for years at Baildon Golf Club, where I’ll finish the challenge.”

Sarah Armstrong of the MND Association, who is supporting Paddy's extraordinary challenge, emphasised that every penny raised will make a real difference to the MND community. As she put it, “Without people like Paddy – their imagination, energy, and heart, none of our work would be possible.”

What made Paddy reach out to Stewart?

When it came to preparing for his 882-hole marathon, Paddy knew one thing for certain: carrying his clubs for 49 rounds in seven days would be doing his back and shoulders no favours... After playing alongside several professionals this year who spoke highly about Stewart Golf, it was the first name that came to mind.

“A trolley would be an amazing help, especially one I can control remotely. I’ve heard nothing but praise from the pros I’ve played with, and I’d love to use a Stewart trolley to get me through this challenge.”

At Stewart Golf, we’re proud to support Paddy on this extraordinary challenge, all in aid of a truly meaningful cause. His new playing partner, the VERTX Remote, will help him navigate each round efficiently, allowing him to conserve energy and stay as fresh as possible from the first hole to the 882nd.
